How Routines Affect Your Projects?
A few years ago, I worked in a company where we used Gantt charts to manage projects.
The concept of a Gantt chart is quite simple. You have a project and break it down into sub tasks. Afterward, you allocate those tasks to specific employees within the organisation.
Usually, the next step is to meet once a week and follow up on the progress of this project.
When I started using this tool, I noticed that many people in the company didn’t finish their projects on time and I wondered, why does it happen?
My assumption was that people don’t take their routines into consideration when predicting how much time a project will take them.
Therefore, my suggestion before you start estimating how much time a project will take you: try to estimate how much time needs to be dedicated per week for your routines and other activities that are not part of the project, such as meetings.
An example, for a week:
You plan to work 40 hours and break down the different tasks as below:
According to this example, you have 10 hours per week to deal with projects.
If the project takes 60 hours, you will finish it in 6 weeks.
