The Art of Delegation
Knowing how to delegate can be the main component of the success of managers and employees in their job.
Sometimes we don’t take the time to evaluate if we are the best people to execute a specific task; we just do the task in autopilot mode.
Within the workplace, we have three options for delegation:
- Internally within the company
- Externally – to third-party companies and freelancers
- Automation
The questions that you want to ask before delegating tasks are:
1. What is the level of expertise that is needed?
If you are the one that could do the job with a quality rank of a hundred percent and your colleague/external party with fifty percent, I assume the best option would be to do the task on your own.
2. What is the time frame?
There are two elements for this:
- How much time does it take from your week?
- Does it need an internal colleague or external party to complete the task?
3. What is the cost?
What is your cost of doing this task, and what would it be for a colleague or external party?
4. Does it need automation?
Is it possible to automate the task, and what would be the cost of doing this?
5. Are there alternative tasks/projects?
If you won’t do this task, what other tasks would you carry out, and what could be the financial benefits for the business?
I created the Task Optimisation Tool that helps to evaluate how to access the above elements and more. You can reach out HERE and discover more about this.
