Five tips for managing our time in stressful periods

The past two years have been hectic for all of us. It started with COVID-19, and now the war threatens to change the world’s “status quo.”

The question is – how can we ease this situation that takes a lot of our attention and energy?

You can see below some tips that could help you overcome the stress in challenging periods of your life.

Tip 1: Stick to routines

In stressful times, it’s important to stick to a specific daily routine, for example:

08:00 Morning run/walk

17:00 Evening walk

20:00 Reading book

Tip 2: Limit your news consumption

When the Russia/Ukraine war started a couple of weeks ago, I consumed news for at least two hours a day.

I started to feel how this activity drained my energy. My solution was to put a reminder to check the news online three times per day without watching the news on my TV. This change in my attitude significantly improved my well-being.

Tip 3: Increase human interactions (in-person)

According to a lot of research done around this topic, human interactions are extremely important for our mental health.

In challenging periods, our mental health is much more vulnerable, and therefore, we need to keep it in mind and give some attention to maintaining our human interactions.

Tip 4: 2.4% Rule

Dedicate at least 240 minutes (2.4% out of a week) to activities that make you feel good.

Tip 5: Find the Golden Activity that makes you calmer

Even in their 40s – 50s, many people don’t know which activities are the best for their body and soul.

This period could be a good time to explore these activities.

Here are some examples:

  • Hiking
  • Cycling
  • Running
  • Yoga
  • Mediation
  • Reading
  • Swimming
