How to create focus using a vision and long-term goal

In the early days of the Gold Model project, a prospective client contacted me to setup a meeting for a potential time management coaching sessions. At the time, I worked out of the WeWork offices in central London, in the city’s hip area of Shoreditch (London). I suggested that we could meet at the offices, and we would create a model for her. When she arrived, she began to recount her story. She was visiting London for two weeks, and back home she worked two jobs: as a hostess at a bed and breakfast and as a yoga instructor. She worked four times more per week at the bed and breakfast per than she did teaching yoga.

We began constructing her a Gold Model for yoga. This was fairly simple, as she was passionate about yoga.  She even declared that she would like to open up a yoga studio one day. We then constructed a model for her for the bed and breakfast. However, when we got to the part about ‘vision’, she told me she didn’t know how to answer, because she worked at the bed and breakfast in order to pay the bills. I asked her,

‘Is there any work at the bed and breakfast that could help you become a better business owner in the future?’

‘Yes, of course’, she replied. ‘I can work in sales, marketing, customer management, etc.”

I then asked her, ‘What if we were to apply your vision for the yoga to the bed and breakfast. In this way, your long and short term goals at the bed and breakfast could be to acquire all the skills you noted might be helpful to start your own yoga business.’

She said that sounded great. Indeed, after a few months, she was promoted at work.

The main point of the story above is to create flexible thinking with the guiding question of ‘How does what I do today contribute to what I want to achieve in the long term?’ Often, with a change of focus, the things we do today, which seem to only serve our short-term goals, can also serve our long-term goals.
