Three steps plan to master your performance while starting a new business

Starting a new business might be the most challenging project you have ever done in your entire life. Having said that, you could take some steps to make the beginning of your journey easier.

A couple of months ago, I mentored a couple of people in the framework of a UK government program who aimed to launch new ventures.

Step 1: Defining the vision and missions

When starting a new business, one of the main points is to stay focused and be aware of how to spend your time most efficiently, especially when the resources are very limited.

Below you can see an example for opening a new restaurant:

VISION: Become the Colombian restaurant leader in West London

LONG TERM MISSION (1 YEAR): Withdraw a salary of £3,000 per month by 30/06/2023

3 MONTHS MISSION: Restaurant up and running by 30/10/2022

1 MONTH MISSION: Finalize the concept and name by 30/07/2022

Step 2: Prepare a plan

Prepare a plan for the next few months where you include:

 – Breakdown of the specific tasks

– Duration in hours of the tasks

– The week in which you plan to start and finish the specific task

I suggest adding to all your estimations an extra 25% in time for unexpected delays that might occur through the process.

Step 3: Build your personal Gold Model

– Define your personal vision, goals, and plan in order to execute your weekly and daily agendas.

Some examples of how to allocate your tasks (which are extracted from stage 2) can be seen below.

While planning your week, don’t forget to evaluate the importance of the tasks you plan to do in alignment with your vision and goals, as seen in the table below.

If the tasks are not that important, see if you can delegate them to someone else or find ways to automate them if possible.

Find below an example of one of the sections of the personal plan:
